Welcome to "TheMessage"

This is a place to give and get messages from everyone. To start I will say that it was wonderful to have Anna, Elva, Luis, Marcela and Sandra at home and Marina through Skype on Friday November 14.
The Message is growing, now Juan Fuentes, Anaís A. Arias-Aragón and Raymond Haywood have joined this group adventure full of hope, sense of humor and love for life.
I'm using Anna's picture of a kitchen with lots of things to do because I feel we are getting ready to "cook" our messages.

The show will be on Saturday July 04 at the Qoricancha Temple in Cusco Peru.
We may have room for just TWO framed works(17 1/2 X 23 inches for the print and 22X30 maximum size for the other one)or works that use walls.
One of your works has to be a print to make The Message portfolio, we may have to print 20 copies of it as we will use 11 just to exchange among us!
The space to hang something or to make a small installation is still open. Please let me know about your ideas.
It will be great to start posting messages on this blog to have a collection that may inspire us!

“El Mensaje”

Proyecto de Exposición Colectiva de trabajos Bidimensionales sobre papel/tela
Grabado/ Fotografía/ Mixed media/ Collage

El Mensaje es una colección de trabajos bidimensionales que explora el tema desde la cotidiana nota recordatorio, los mensajes telefónicos, las cartas, los e- mails, etc. hasta los mensajes simbólicos sociales y espirituales que manifiestan nuestra condición humana.
Cada trabajo estará acompañado de un pequeño texto-poema escrito por el artista o alguien más. El mensaje busca sacar la voz de cada artista y decir lo que tiene que decir en estos tiempos de cambio y búsqueda.
Cada artista participará con dos trabajos, lo que hace un total de 22 trabajos.
Todos los trabajos serán hechos para este tema y se mostrarán por primera vez
en la exposición del Qoricancha.

Light ,shadow, line,and texture in faces, landscapes and objects inspire me.
Photography is the lens to my world.

I have been taking pictures all my adult life and after taking photography classes
at Laney College in Oakland I began my professional practice and showing my photos. I also discovered the darkroom where I have spent countless hours making the perfect print of each image I choose. I have also taken classes at the Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts. In my early 20's I spent 2 years traveling in Columbia, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia. I spent more than a year in Peru, living in Urubamba, Cusco and Lima. The light is different in the Andes, it was then
that I began to really try to capture what I was seeing.

As a child with the best vision in the family it was my job to see, and to share what I could see, a natural bridge to photography. I worked and lived in a wide variety of settings from canneries in Alaska, Head Start ( a federally funded preschool program for low income families) in Marin to Peru before completing a Bachelor's degree in Nursing and working as nurse in San Francisco. After 3 years I decided to change careers and began taking premed classes. Two years later I went to medical school in southern California. I am now a pediatric hospitalist in Oakland, taking care of hospitalized children. I love to travel and as a doctor have been able to join medical missions in Asia and South America. I always bring my camera. Combining volunteer work with travel gives me a more intimate connection with the people and places I photograph on these trips.

The physical and cultural diversity of the San Francisco Bay Area is hard to beat.
Fairs, demonstrations and street life in the cities, my places of sanctuary on the coast of West Marin, the drama of the high Sierra on my annual backpacking trip
all invite documentation.

I have shown my work at various public places I have also participated in juried group shows at Pro Arts and Laney College in Oakland, as well as the Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts in San Francisco. I have had photos published in the Worker's World, the Marin County Watershed Conservation Calender, Revolution - a nurses' magazine, and Utne Reader.

Durante los ultimos años, mi trabajo se ha concentrado en temas de culturales,
sociales y políticos relacionados con la mujer.
Mis últimos trabajos vuelven a observar una vez más la relación contemporánea
entre la mujer y la religión.
La Iglesia ha dominado a la mujer por siglos. Tradicionalmente las mujeres han sido representadas como Diosas de la Fertilidad, de la Sensualidad y la Vida, pero muchas religiones las han convertido en Virgenes (castas y puras). Al deconstruir esta relación entre la mujer y la religión, varios temas y símbolos se materializan: el dogma, la autoridad, la sangre, el sufrimiento, las sombras y la culpa. Esta larga historia de acondicionamiento de la mujer y su papel en la sociedad sigue en vigencia hoy en dia.
Mi trabajo muestra como hoy en dia la religión continúa debilitando la voz de la
mujer y sus derechos a través de complejos niveles de poderes religiosos, todo en el nombre de Dios.

En los ultimos años y como Inmigrante en Estados Unidos mis trabajos han estado concentrados en la memoria. Un lugar en el cual dos mundos convergen, dos ritmos, dos culturas. Con esta idea he creado distintos mapas sobre mis memorias del Sur y mi
nueva y más inmediata memoria del Norte.
Utilizando la tecnología gps he creado un mapa de sonidos e imagenes
superponiendo la ciudad de Buenos Aires en particular mi barrio y la ciudad de San Francisco en donde vivo hoy. El público experimenta una ciudad, sus sonidos, y rituales, el estar allá por un momento para tal vez provocar una memoria de un lugar más alla.

Hoy en día trabajo en el centro Cultural de la Mision para Arte Latino, en San Francisco en donde enseñe clases de mosaicos para niños. En este momento trabajo en la Galeria de Arte del Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts.



Marina Tsesarskaya (Ukrania)

Marina Tsesarskaya works are primarily concerned with issues of communication between the inner self and the outer world, exploring such themes as shared experience and the commonality of internal emotional experience. Her work has been exhibited internationally in the U.S., Canada, Russia, and her native Ukraine where she graduated with a MFA from the Kiev Academy of Fine Arts.
She has also completed a BFA in College of Fine Arts and Industrial Design, Kiev, Ukraine. Ms. Tsesarskaya has received numerous awards, the most recently in 2002, awarded by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority for Arts for Transit, a stain glass project for the White Plains Road Station. Her work has been included in such collections as the Tate Museum, The New York Public Library, The Brooklyn Museum of Art, The Walker Art Center and more. Currently, Marina lives and works in New York.


Luis Vásquez-Gómez (Colombia)
Artista, Educador, y Organizador comunitario.

Luis es un artista multidisciplinario viviendo en San Francisco, CA. El estudió
producción de cine en la Universidad Estatal de San Francisco, California.
Su arte esta inspirado en su diario cuestionamiento de la sociedad moderna que
con sus conceptos de eterna juventud, fama, y consumismo, crea a cada momento un distanciamiento entre los individuos, obligándolos a una soledad “voluntaria”. Luis ha creado una serie de serigrafías que tienen como tema principal la celebración del día de los Muertos en San Francisco.
En el año 2006, el fue comisionado por Centro Cultural de la Misión en San Francisco, para crear un altar que conmemorara la vidas de los jóvenes muertos por la violencia de pandillas. Ese mismo año el ayudó a producir, y actuó en un obra de teatro acerca de inmigración de colombianos al área de la bahía de San Francisco y fue presentada en el Festival Internacional de Arte de San Francisco.

Marcela Reyes una artista y diseñadora gráfica que explora los potenciales del arte y el diseño como agentes influyentes de educación, cambio y justicia social.
Como comunicadora visual, siente una gran responsabilidad de usar su arte como un vehiculo para cultivar compasión, empatía, conciencia social y global.
Su arte desafía la injusticia y la complacencia de nuestra condiciíon humana.

Se crió en Bolivia, Venezuela y los Estados Unidos. Su trabajo ha sido expuesto en California en San Jose State University, San Jose; Mission Cultural Center, San Francisco; Artaud Theater, San Francisco; Million Fishes Collective, San Francisco; y en The Food for Thought Café en Porland, Oregon. Ella es miembro de San Francisco Print Collective.

Casting my visions in visual permanence is how I release and harness emotion and passion. Within this creative process I feel my life remains an endless journey of self-discovery where feelings, images, and responses are intuitively brought to life.

Growing up in Bolivia, Venezuela and the United States has brought into my life a wealth of experiences that have allowed me to have a better and broader understanding of humankind. As I develop through life, personally as well as artistically, I have experienced a shift in perceptions about the "role" that an artist/designer has as an active member of society.

My current body of work is based on a personal exploration of the potentialities of art and design and of the impact that they can have in our society as a whole. I feel the responsibility to use my artistic sensibility and creativity as vehicles to cultivate compassion, consciousness, and global awareness. Ultimately, I would like my work to infuse the viewer with empathy and a sense of responsibility;
a starting point into taking action and creating a difference.

ANNA MORALES SIMSON

Anna Morales Simson is an artist who loves printmaking. Her work has been shown
throughout the Bay Area, including at the deYoung Art Center and the Palace of the
Legion of Honor. Most recently, she was invited to create a screenprint for a portfolio called “Nueve Mujeres” at the Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts. She received her BA from UC Berkeley and is currently pursuing an MFA at California College of the Arts.

Artista visual nacida en Lima Perú. Ha trabajado en el campo del arte, educación
y tecnología desde1982.
Su trabajo artístico va desde la video instalación, espectáculos multimedia,
intervenciones en espacios públicos hasta libros objeto, cerámica, fotografía,
poesía, diseño de vestuario, performance y pintura.

“Mi trabajo es consecuencia de la experiencia diaria, transformándola, experimentando, jugando, creando conecciones, encontrando contradicciones, explorando, jugando. Estoy interesada en la manera en que los objetos, personajes e instalaciones provocan experiencias personales en la audiencia conectándolas con aspectos de su propia identidad. Estoy interesada en la forma en que el espacio y la interacción transforma el significado del mismo video y la experiencia de las personas que participan.

Mi experiencia trabajando con niños y adultos en el area de la Bahía es en Thousand Oaks Elementary School, le Conte Elementary School en Berkeley, Sanchez Elementary, San Francisco, The Mission Cultural center, San Francisco, SF MOMA, The Marsh Youth Theater, Planned Parenthood Golden Gate, The Good Samaritan, Hypersea Living Walls Project.

De 1982 al 2001 Susana Aragón trabajó en colaboración bajo el nombre Arias &
Aragón haciendo muchas video instalaciones, performances, espectáculos multimedia, dirección artística para películas, video poesía, esculturas, objetos tridimensionales, pintura, pintura de cuepo, reuniones y recitales poéticos, diseño gráfico y promoción cultural en Perú, Francia, Japón, Mexico, Chile, Canada,
Polonia, etc. Arias & Aragón editó un libro de foto poesía llamado Altares en Peru (edición tri-lingue) y ganaron premios de fotografía pintura y video.

In 1997, I produced my first linocut after many years as primarily a poster maker and silkscreen artist. Influenced by the social realist tradition of Latin American printmaking (Jose Guadalupe Posada, Leopoldo Mendez, American Artist Elizabeth Catlett and Rupert Garcia) I have been exploring traditional printmaking, in particular woodcut and linoleum techniques. My focus has continued to be the figure or portrait as a means to tell a story, elaborating on the human condition. The prints that I have produced in the last two years are of people carrying objects or in the process of work. This carrying of things has been a metaphor for the heavy load on one’s shoulders through experiences of living. I have been an artist and cultural activist in the San Francisco, community for over thirty years and a mentor to many young emerging artists. My early poster art is now part of the Chicano Poster Movement. I recently retired and I will be dedicating my energy to creating more art and this year I will launch a new press called “Pajaro Editions” from my home and studio. Pájaro Editions will be part of a larger collective of Chicano/Latino printmakers, called Consejo Grafico which meets annually. We work to promote and help sustain our Talleres nationally. Our work has included the development of images for AIDS awareness and obesity in the Latino community.

My richly layered paintings on board depict the emotional states I have inhabited in the relationships where I felt connection. Recently I have been investigating the role that love has had in my life.
My latest body of work entitled, "alphabet of love" is a collection of positive and negative associations regarding the act of loving. These paintings are a cross section of my emotional experience. These works represent a specific lexicon of literal images, stencils, found photos and silkscreen imagery that have allowed me to manifest paintings.
My creative works are signifiers of time extinguished, and each painting is a
moment in time presented for emotional contemplation. The intellectual and physical process of painting and design are sustenance.
Utilizing silkscreen printing, direct photo collage, acrylic and alkyd paint, and my signature
Stencils, derived from pen and ink illustrations, I invite the viewer to experience my expressions of emotion.

Through my paintings I share a moment in time, captured, so that the ethereal persists. I generally work on a series of pieces, allowing chance to clarify ideas that are often lost when working on a single piece. I ritually prepare multiple pieces on board or fabric with gestural marks and line drawings, adding certain stencils to facilitate a dialog between the media and myself. As I work, images and mood begin to coalesce as the pieces take shape.
